The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced on March 11, 2025 that $2.9 million has been awarded to 29 community-led projects to enhance planning for shared electric transportation solutions in New York.
Ithaca Carshare, in collaboration with our parent organization the Center for Community Transportation, Inc., has been awarded one of these planning grants to study the feasibility of multimodal micromobility hubs in Tompkins County.
Multimodal micromobility hubs are sites that connect different types of transportation modes near a public bus stop, and give residents and commuters a variety of options for getting to their final destination.
These options can include infrastructure for Electric Vehicle charging stations for carsharing and personal vehicles, charging stations for e-bikes (personal and shared), designated pickup/dropoff areas for ride-hailing, and more. The construction of these hubs is intended to make alternate forms of transportation more accessible and available.
Throughout the study, which will conclude in June, the CCT is engaging local stakeholders to understand the community’s needs around alternative and active modes of transportation, what they would like to see in these hubs, and where they would like to see them.
Anyone who lives or works in Tompkins County is invited to participate in a survey to share your ideas around these hubs. The survey will be open through Friday, May 2, 2025. We will also hold two public community engagement events (see below).
The grant is designed to enable the CCT to develop a plan for implementing the hubs in Tompkins County in the outlying areas of the City of Ithaca, in order to help facilitate first and last mile connections.
The completed CCT plan will serve as a blueprint for applying for a more substantial development grant from NYSERDA to fund implementation of the hubs.
