Carsharing can simplify your life!
Ithaca Carshare is a membership service offering 24/7 self-serve access to fuel-efficient cars, a minivan, and a truck conveniently located in Ithaca, NY. We encourage cycling, walking, and using public transit, but understand that for some trips you just need a car to get yourself, your family, and your stuff to the right place.
That’s where Ithaca Carshare comes in – our members have access to a growing fleet of vehicles, and only pay for a car when they actually use it. Sharing our cars as needed can save members hundreds of dollars each month over owning a car!
How does it work?
First, you need to become a member. Just fill out our online application and we’ll take a look at your driving record to make sure that it meets our eligibility requirements. It can take up to a week to process an application, so apply early to make sure you can start reserving vehicles as soon as you need them.
Once you are a member, you can book any car in our fleet for for as little as 30 minutes. There are no limits to how many bookings you can make, as long as they do not overlap. Bookings can be made online, through our mobile website, or by calling us. When your booking starts, you’ll simply place your personal keycard over a reader on the car, and it will unlock for you. Drive where you need to go, and return the car when you are done. All of this can be done without going to an office, filling out paperwork, or picking up keys!
What type of trips is Ithaca Carshare meant for?
Our rate structure is optimized for short and medium term trips (think hours, not days). Since hourly and mileage rates apply to all trips, overnight or multi-day trips can add up. We do have a day rate available on many of our vehicles, however we encourage you to get used to the system with shorter errand-length trips before taking a car for a longer time.
Common trips: Grocery shopping, running errands, visiting friends, doctor’s visits, airport dropoffs, visiting a local or state park, or picking up kids from school.
Trips we don’t recommend: Multi-day, long-distance trips, daily commuting, or leaving a car parked at home overnight.
Think of carsharing as an extension of public transit, walking or biking, or a fill-in for a second family car. For longer trips we recommend conventional car rental, ridesharing, bus, or rail. See Other Transportation or call 211 for local information. If you have a question about whether a particular trip is appropriate for carsharing, drop us a line or give us a ring at 607.277.3210 x3, and we can help you navigate the options.
